Background
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is produced by the pituitary gland and takes an important part in the reproductive system. LH is necessary for sexual development and fertility in both males and females. In females, LH triggers ovulation and the production of progesterone. In males, LH stimulates testosterone production by the Leydig cells in the testes. LH testing can diagnose conditions related to excessive or insufficient LH production, such as infertility or pituitary gland disorders. LH takes an important part in the reproductive system, influencing sex hormone production, ovulation and in general reproductive function in both males and females.
