About PFDN / Prefoldin:

Prefoldin (PFDN) complex was discovered by scientists 20 years ago and has since been found to be a cytoplasmic chaperone protein. This means that this protein regulates and controls the folding of other proteins, although it does have other functions as a protein.

PFDN Function
The importance of this protein is that it enables other proteins to fold correctly. There are crucial formats in the ways that other proteins fold and if folded incorrectly can cause significant abnormalities. Prefoldin attaches to other proteins and once folded correctly it unbinds and can then transport to other cells in need. This makes the protein incredibly useful as it will recognize immaturities and irregularities in the folding process resulting in optimum folding for the correct purposes.
Prefoldin had been found to play a critical role in common neurological degenerative illnesses such as; Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The discovery of this protein being found in tumors has channeled scientific research for many years. Prefoldin can be used in conjunction with other binding proteins to treat and regulate the growth of tumor development.

Prefoldin Structure
The prefoldin complex is made of six separate proteins known as subunits. The acquisition of these subunits supports the repression of toxic proteins being created. Scientific research is still developing an understanding of Prefoldin and the Prefoldin Complex and how helpful it can play in the creation of other proteins.
